Our story

LaserPhilly is a retail shop and design studio specializing in well-designed, unusually clever home goods and quality custom laser cutting and engraving services for people and business.

We use traditional handmade techniques & innovative technology to make and sell atypically clever, beautiful and functional goods that include tongue-in-cheek accessories, innovative artwork and pop culture-infused décor. And, we offer quality custom laser cutting and engraving services. 


We aim to develop a creative eco-system that demystifies the making process, democratizes customization and promotes the idea that shopping small, diverse creative businesses is the best way to find quality unique gifts and goods. In addition to our own in-house made goods, we collaborate with and carry the work of ~5 other makers, all of whom come from traditionally underserved communities. 


LaserPhilly was originally founded as Philadelphia Laser & Industrial Design (a.k.a. PLAID) in 2017 by Sharif Pendleton, a self-professed nerd who asks too many questions. He's an ever curious artist and designer obsessed with creating products and processes that solve problems for people and industries. Previously, Sharif founded Masters of None - the precursor to LaserPhilly.

How we got here

  1. 2023

    LaserPhilly Brick & Mortar

    Bought a building in Northern Liberties, moved out of Cherry Street Pier, rebranded, expanded the gift shop. The expanded footprint means we also now have space to run workshops. And, it meant going from a one man show to a team.

  2. 2018

    Studio to Storefront

    After a year in our studio space, we were asked to be a part of the first artist cohort at Cherry Street Pier. In addition to offering custom laser cutting services, we added a small gift shop in this space.

  3. 2017

    A Space to Call our Own

    After reevaluating priorities and goals, it was time to jump back in and to change the scenery. After working for years out of NextFab, we invested in our own equipment and moved into a studio space in Kensington.

  4. 2013-2015

    Time for a Break

    Three and half years of grinding as a pioneer in the creative space takes its toll. Sharif had big ideas and big goals, but needed to create a clearer path to achieve them.

  5. 2009

    New Tech Means New Ideas

    After reading that a makerspace would be opening in Philly, Sharif became the first member. Using his creative background, combined with the tech at NextFab, he created his first products and began selling online and shipping goods around the world. He got a lot of buzz and coverage from Philly to the Netherlands and used that to expand products and start taking on custom laser cutting work.
